Letter from our President and Executive Director

As workforce issues grew for manufacturers in 2022, Manufacturing Works expanded our programs to help address them.

  • Educating high school students on the opportunities available to them in manufacturing is an important place to start. To expose students to the opportunities, our program includes presentations, tours, job shadows, and internships.
  • For those already employed in manufacturing, but looking for a career path, we worked with their employers to offer apprenticeships, leading to higher job satisfaction and employer loyalty.
  • We knew there was a step between, so we piloted a pre-apprenticeship program. Educating adults still looking for meaningful employment led to one third of the participants entering manufacturing as a career.
  • Sometimes the solution for workforce issues was to use collaborative robots to perform repetitive, low-value tasks. Our subject-matter-expert members were able to educate and consult with manufacturers to develop solutions right for them.
  • Leadership at every level continues to be a focus of Manufacturing Works. We offer programs for business owners thinking about retirement, experienced leaders looking to make the ultimate step of owning their own manufacturing business, and, finally, for supervisors at all levels of experience we offer programs to help them more fully embrace their critical role in the business.

In 2022 our apprenticeship program grew exponentially! In the coming years that will mean many more graduates than the one who received his certification in 2022. Companies in the consortium increased from 23 to 36. Individual apprentices jumped from 24 to 35. That number includes a student from our pre-apprenticeship program.

Those who participate in the Leadership Institute take different paths to success! Starting or acquiring a manufacturing company is just one way. Three of the 2022 graduates are actively looking to go down this road. However, there are several other paths leaders can take. One individual was promoted to the acquisition team at her company. Another was given equity at his company. Yet another, a current business owner, is continuing to be assisted by Manufacturing Works as she purchases a new building for expansion.

Our Manufacturing Technologies program starts with education. We help manufacturing businesses how to use technologies to create manufacturing process improvements that solve not only production challenges but also people shortages. These technologies are not meant to replace the workforce, but to enhance it as outlined in one of the case studies published on our blog.

Since its inception in 1996, the core components of the Cleveland Industrial Retention Initiative (CIRI) have been outreach, assessment, and service delivery. Since 2021 the team has focused their efforts on high-impact projects involving manufacturing companies with indicating factors such as being a part of a growth industry, number of employees, annual sales volume, capital investment for expansion, and new products.
