### 2021 Annual Report
### Letter from our President and Executive Director
2021 was a year of firsts for Manufacturing Works!
Despite our organization's long history, we continue to look for new ways to serve the Northeast Ohio manufacturing community. 2021 was a great example of our bringing innovative programs to life.
- In April, the first two apprentices from our consortium completed their training program. Their success motivated their employer to immediately register another group to begin training. This new class contains our first female apprentice.
- In May we celebrated the first of what we are certain will be many Manufacturing Works-facilitated ownership transitions. The transition, between two member companies, ultimately assured the company would stay in Cleveland and preserved dozens of local jobs.
- June saw us launch a new model of supervisory training. Developed specifically with our manufacturing members in mind, the program is more focused on attraction and retention of employees.
- To build the pipeline of future manufacturing business owners, in December we kicked off the first cohort of our Leadership Institute. This program focuses on diversity and inclusion and aims to engage at least 50% women and/or people of color.
As we welcomed these firsts to our list of accomplishments, we also continued to provide the valuable services that our manufacturing community has come to expect over the years.
- We stepped up our efforts to engage high school students by expanding our program into three local school districts.
- Technology went "hands-on" helping participants build their own custom business app.
- Our outreach team focused on companies with projects where they could have the greatest impact.
This blending of new and existing programs that occurred in 2021 is a result of asking how we can assist our manufacturing community navigate issues and opportunities.

## Leadership
Designed from the ground up for manufacturing and related industry owners, our leadership programs focus on the needs of the participants. Our Ownership Transition program helps current owners with what may be the biggest decision in their professional life. While our Leadership Institute is designed to develop and diversify the next generation of manufacturing leaders.

of the first cohort were women and/or people of color – surpassing our goal of 50%.

supervisors from 11 companies participated in our new customized supervisory training, more focused on attraction and retention of employees.

## Workforce
Manufacturing Works understands manufacturers' challenges and can provide resources that help. Compensation and benefits aren't the only factors employees consider when looking for a job. With the industry changing and evolving at such a rapid pace, manufacturing companies need to use creative employee attraction strategies to recruit and hire the best candidates.

new apprentices enrolled in paid job training and technical training for the occupations of CNC operator/programmer, maintenance mechanic, tool & die maker, and welder.

high school students from three school districts participated in experiential learning with partner companies, such as Hose Master, Jergens, Inc., Rockwell Automation, and Lincoln Electric.

## Technology
Manufacturing Works provides insights into advanced manufacturing technologies that can provide cost-effective solutions to chronic problems. We help businesses understand how to be strategic and use these emerging technologies to create manufacturing process improvements that solve people and production challenges.

people from 37 companies attended 8 webinars and work sessions resulting in 17 referrals to service providers.

## CIRI
Since its inception in 1996, the core components of the Cleveland Industrial Retention Initiative (CIRI) have been outreach, assessment, and service delivery. While this process has not changed, in 2021 the team focused their efforts on high-impact projects involving manufacturing companies with indicating factors such as being a part of a growth industry, number of employees, annual sales volume, capital investment for expansion, and new products.
- 12 impact projects were completed, assisting companies with infrastructure issues, physical plant improvements, and expansion/relocation opportunities.
- 300 companies were surveyed resulting in 235 services.
